Hiring guide
What to check, what to ask, and the warning signs that are worth walking away from.
Painting has a low barrier to entry, so the range in quality is wide. Almost everything you need to judge a contractor shows up before work starts.
A large deposit demanded up front. Pressure to decide today. No written scope. A quote given without seeing the property. Reluctance to provide insurance details. A number far below everyone else with no explanation of what is different.
Put them side by side on scope, not price. Line up preparation, coats, products and exclusions, and the cheapest quote usually turns out to be a smaller job. See what drives painting cost or browse all our services.
A reasonable deposit for materials on a scheduled job is normal. Being asked for most of the total before anyone arrives is not, and it is the most common warning sign.
Compare scope rather than price: preparation, number of coats, products and exclusions. Quotes that look far apart on price are usually far apart on scope.
Texas does not issue a statewide painting license, which is exactly why insurance, a written scope and references matter more here than a license number would.
Ours is written, itemized, and separates preparation from paint, so you can put it next to anyone else’s.
