Sherwin-Williams vs Benjamin Moore vs PPG: What We Use and Why

Arguing about brands misses the point. Each of these makes several tiers, and the gap between a builder-grade line and a premium line from the same manufacturer is far wider than the gap between brands at the same tier.

How they compare in practice

• Sherwin-Williams. Deep range, very consistent tinting, and trade outlets everywhere in Houston, which matters when a job needs more product mid-week. Their upper exterior lines hold colour well in strong sun.
• Benjamin Moore. Excellent colour depth and levelling, which shows most on trim, doors and cabinetry where brush marks would be visible.
• PPG. Strong value across the mid and upper range, and widely available. Often the sensible choice on larger areas where budget matters.

Where paying more actually returns something

Exteriors, without question. UV and humidity resistance is the difference between a repaint that lasts and one that chalks on the south elevation in a couple of years. Trim, doors and cabinets, where levelling and hardness decide whether the finish looks sprayed or brushed. On low-traffic interior walls the difference is smaller.
